The Fleetwoods – Come Softly To Me

Probably the whitest sounding hit of the rock ‘n’ roll era, it’s also one of the most gorgeous. Everything about it is measured and understated, from Gary Troxel’s subtle ‘do be do, dom, doms’ to the purity of Gretchen Christopher’s lead harmony vocal. And yet it’s the song’s very clean cutness – its squareness even – that gives it just the right touch of strangeness.

Delivered as a whisper, it’s as powerful and as moving as shouting your love from the rooftops.
