Iggy Pop – Success

I like this song for a few specific reasons: Iggy’s vocal (he’s one of the most underrated rock singers out there), the lyrics that attempt to define what success is (Chinese rugs, zoos, going out in the street and doing anything you want etc.), the guitar line that sounds like, appropriately, Desmond Dekker’s You Can Get It If You Really Want, the fact that Iggy was in the middle of experiencing genuine success at the time of recording….

Most of all I like it for the great call and response vocals, with the backing singers repeating every single line Iggy delivers – even at the end, where things fall apart a bit, and he’s telling them that they slay him and “Oh shit!”

And of all the tracks on Lust For Life, this is the one that comes closest to mirroring the front cover shot of Iggy’s lovely grinning face.
