Sam Cooke – Only Sixteen

Beyond mere fluff due to the sheer determination of its innocence and simplicity and for Cooke’s marvellous, slightly yearning, vocal. Plus, of course, there’s the clever reveal that the singer is, in fact, only seventeen-years-old (which undercuts our initial feeling that he must be talking about a long-lost love and makes us smile at the notion that he believes he’s now a man, fully prepared for all of love’s tribulations).

Its sweetness also allows it to get away with the oddness and clunkiness of hearts and eyes somehow glowing.

Oh this is just such a great song – love the little de-de from the (base?) guitar – and such a wonderful voice – thank you.
