Beat Happening – Indian Summer

Beat Happening were a cracking little band. Endearingly amateurish and a massive influence on all the twee, jingle-jangle indie bands of the mid/late-80s. But don’t hold that against them.

This, one of their best songs, makes good use of their three-piece line-up and shows off their debt to the Velvet Underground. On the surface it’s a fairly simple, and straightforward, love song – but it’s all undercut, and given depth, by the twist in the lyrics (“…go our separate ways”) and Calvin Johnson’s mournful baritone.

Lovely.
