Culturcide – We're Not The World

As it’s a terrible song to begin with, Culturcide’s version – which consists of them tunelessly singing their critiques of the USA For Africa project over the top of the original record – is also terrible. It’s not even very funny.

Still, I have a soft spot for this song due to the fact that during my first week at college I played it to the class as part of the ‘bring in your current favourite cultural artefact and talk about it for a bit’ assignment. What I was expecting was that everyone would realise what a cool, sticking-it-to-the man hipster I was and love me forever. However, the only reaction I got was from irate – absolutely bloody furious – Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie fans who just couldn’t believe that anyone could disrespect them. Bollocks, I replied. And from there a massive argument erupted.

So the song did its job.

NB: As part of the same assignment, one of the girls played an Einstürzende Neubauten record. She was very cool.
