The Cryin' Shames – Please Stay

The Cryin’ Shames were a run-of-the mill Merseybeat band with just this, their one minor hit, to recommend them. It’s notable for being Joe Meek’s last chart appearance and comes complete with his dense and rather eerie production. But what makes it truly great is Charlie Crane’s yearning and soulful lead vocal: it’s this that lifts it way above The Drifters’ original version. He sounds like a broken, desperate man – something that’s confirmed at 2:39 when his voice cracks, leaving a moment’s silence that says it all.
