High Places – Head Spins

They’re a New York hipster duo and, I think, a couple. You can imagine.

They make electronic music that doesn’t sound electronic: you can hear banjos and guitars, the clumsy thud of drums and other things banging together. It sounds like they record their music in their bedroom. They’re like The Shaggs or The Shop Assistants; melodic and poppy but with this dreamy, clever, tricksy stuff moving about underneath.

Very studied and sort of what you’d expect a New York hipster duo couple to come up with. They probably couldn’t write a top 20 pop song to save their lives. But what they’ve got here is a very compelling sleight of hand. I love it.
